We'll meet on Vashon Island.

Don, your second husband is so very much nicer!

I love islands in North America: Though I know only the island „Mount Desert“ in Maine and not the island at the Pacific Coast –Betty's Vashon Island is near Seattle – however things seem to me to be very similar: Magic landscape, cosmic influences and thousands of small odd bits of land swimming in the wide ocean. Can they really swim? It looks as if they were wearing a life jacket around the lushgreen of the woods...

I like Betty's and Don's house! Though I am missing „STOVE“ still there is a mad washing machine that makes life here interesting. What ghosts are likely to live within it? (Don is a Scotsman, I think he has taken it out of a haunted castle). Betty's daughters also live here: They are capricious girls with silly notions! „STOVE“ could be the father! Pity, they have been nicer in the other books when they were still little and sweet!

However, there are nice cats and dogs: Betty is a great animal friend. She has even stored a huge amount of dog and cat boxes in the house. Indeed, the American kitchen is unbelievable!
When Betty can't buy food for humans – this happens with a stormy sea when the ferry boats can't deliver the island – she willingly resorts to those in the „worst case“.O, that culinary ability to adapt myself I will never develop! Do I perhaps eat the mice which my tomcat Tigerli brings me?

Betty's cook book is inexhaustible. From wild animals to marine creatures on the coast. In the Pacific fantastic fish and crustaceans live: Spoiled for choice! O seafood! „The king“ is the lobster, I learned in Maine!

However in Seattle it seems to be „Geoduck“! It's a sensation: It's got along neck! A sea giraffe? What's that? Betty help me! The damned name “Geoduck“ I don't find in my dictionary. The British encyclopedia Britannica doesn't know it either...Moment! I am looking it up in „The American Heritage Dictionary“. Thank God, I have found it: It's „a very large edible clam“. Clam of the size of 20cm.
What's the „cazze di Napoli“ in comparison to that? Mussels, shame upon you before the American! I look out of the window: Betty is crawling in the water with the whole family! Her daughter discovered Geoduck in the water. She grasps the neck of the animal! Clam is in a jam! It's caught! All are shouting for joy! What a delicacy! Betty is running into the kitchen: Clam is being prepared: I turn my eyes elsewhere, I don't want to see anything of it. I hear how the meat is smashed. Eggs are beat together with it. My stomach also feels sick.

Betty is calling to eat. I dont eat that strange animal. It tastes heavenly, says Betty! I believe

I will leave the island.

Wolfgang Hampel visited all the places where Betty MacDonald and her family lived.
He interviewed Betty MacDonald's and Mary Bard Jensen's family and friends.
Betty MacDonald's very witty sister Alison Bard Burnett is beloved all over the world because of Wolfgang Hampel's unique interviews.

BOB, STOVE AND GETTING UP AT 4 O' CLOCK

Betty can do everything Damned farm! The slightest kind of culture is missing: Only Betty „is“ everything! That Bob! I would have died with him at the farm! Mamma mia, che coraggio, what a test of courage for a cultivated woman to be living with such a ruffian for four years!

To get two children with him! Betty was „so“ twice. Still she doesn't tell how she got „so“. Prudish America! The reader is told only that she became pregnant! However, about miscarriages and illegal abortions he'll get ever so much information! I'm not eager to know it in greater detail.

Did Betty know how she became pregnant? Perhaps not, too: She and Bob simply went to bed, drunk. These vast amounts of bootlegged whisky must have had some „side effects“. Bob is a beautiful, strong man. Be it so, however, much alcohol makes all members listless (him who has ears shall listen)! „Man becomes weak, but the tomcat strong“! Said even my little author kitten Schönkopf to a drunk Goethe. Betty, your Bob can go hang! I know such types only from a far, thank God, and not personally.

A, the beautiful rough men! They swim in the cold ocean, fell the wood, aren't sensitive to the weather, shoot the wild animals and bring them to the woman to roast! I can understand Betty! She's been too young: She's been a little finecat lady fond of adventures! She lost her head for a wild tomcat! Alla waste of time?
No, all for the Chicken! Since Bob lost his head for chickens! He had eyes solely for his chickens! Now I know it: Corns (in German called Chickens' eyes) men have got who are lying at the feet of chickens! Bob should have married a laying hen! Not a greatwriter lady.

But why has Betty done everything for his five hundred „mistresses“? Has she actually liked it at all working at a chickens' farm (chicken's harem)? No, only to earn Bob's love, to please the husband! Her mother told her and her sisters: „It would be the inevitable duty of a good housewife to take care of it so that her spouse feels good at his work“. Accept joyfully the consequences that result of it!

That's it! Like in Southern Italy! Poor Betty, she has stranded at an old farm far from a town. The nearest neighbours were two miles away. No culture! Only noise: STOVE concerts instead of Gospel concerts! This Bob was an impossible fellow! He has built a henhouse with every comfort for his chickens (mistresses always get presents, money one saves with the wife) and for Betty only a house without water and toilet! Hard life at the farm!!! With crisp cold to go to the toilet.
Getting up at 4 o'clock...No „master“ Bob! And neither „STOVE“: One doesn't play so outrageously with a woman's patience!

Your bestseller „The Egg and I“ the greatest discovery. And you and I! I know America: It's true what you are writing: That's America: Absolutely right! No, even to the least detail! The landscape and the passion: Do you know the country where pistols blossom? Brava, Betty, you are describing the Americans vividly, genuinely, insufferably, brushed upon paper. If I like to read your works? To read doesn't even express it! I can even hear and see everything: Nature, culture, subculture.

America has almost remained unchanged! O those cool Americans! Calculating, stockmarket, Wall Street, the financial crisis (even back in 1930), the gamblers, the bankruptcy of companies! The swarming of dodgers and cheaters. People left without money. Dispair und hunger! A terrible „Worst Case“ (when I knew but little English I thought it is sausage with cheese).

Still how impressive is the ability to adaptone self of the Americans: They know how to enjoy life, acrobats of survival! In the twinkle of an eye they achieved to adapt themselves and effect the work of pioneers: In the morning you are a cleaningwoman, in the evening a brothel woman! No problem!

„The insufficient, here it's becoming an event; The indescribable, here it's done;“ Mary Bard Jensen, your sister, was the treasure trove of procuring work: My word, what a power woman with unlimited imagination! She has recommended you everywhere: Betty can do everything, also write novels! Go ahead, sister, hurry up! The editor wants to see your manuscripts! I'm a chickens slave from North America! O Betty, without these damned animals, no chance of you becoming famous! „The Egg and I“ you would never have written! How many readers you have made happy!

Your book is so amusing! Your witty fine (almost nasty) remarks about your family members and roundabout neighbours made me laugh so much! You have been born into a special family: Comfort was not desired: I can't but be amazed: What did your father say to your mother? After tomorrow I am going to work elsewhere: Thousands of miles away...He sent her a telegram: LEAVING FOR TWO YEARS ON THURSDAY FOR MEXICO CITY STOP GET READY IF YOU WANT TO COME ALONG – That was on Monday. Mother wired back: SHALL BE READY, and so she was.That's America! Improvisation, change, adventure. You show no weakness: Let's go! Your descriptions, Betty, about the tremendous happenings in nature have deeply frightened me.

Continent America, I'm terrified by you! I feel so small and threatened like a tiny fly before an enormous flyswatter! Your novel is very many-sided! The reader may use it even as a cook book! „The Egg and I“ starts straight away with a recipe: „Next to the wisdom that lamb meat doesn't taste good unless it has been roasted with garlic“. Do you enjoy the American food?

O Betty, it's too fatty for me and I hate garlic! (Betty is presently cooking lunch for Bob. She's continually talking to „STOVE“: STOVE is Bob's rival; in the beginning I thought it was being himself). She turns round and says: Well, so no garlic for you. No lamb either, Betty. I don't eat any meat! I'd actually prefer only fried eggs. Betty, let me make them myself. Then you try it!

Blow! „STOVE“ out of order! I don't succeed in turning it on! Damned! It's got more of a mind of its own than „STOVE“ of my friend, Hilde Domin! Bob's coming! He must eat directly! „Men eat anything, the swines! Says your grandmother Gammy“. Is it true? Do you like my chickens? Bob asked me without introducing himself. Yes, Bob (rude) I love them! I'm vegetarian. Do you want to clean the henhouse with me tomorrow? A, you're always getting up so early at four o'clock! Bob, that's not a job for me! He looked at me disdainfully! A Roman cissy! You need a reeducation at once! Help, Bob's attacking me! I rather change the novel immediately and move to the „Island“!

Letizia Mancino and a jealous dwarf

Here are Anita and Eartha Kitt II talking,

I have to tell you that sometimes I feel a bit like one of these mentioned awful jealous dwarfs. I can tell you the reason why.
Wolfgang Hampel had the fantastic idea to found Betty MacDonald Fan Club, to visit all the places where Betty MacDonald and her family lived and to interview her family and friends.

What is the difference between us? I ask Eartha the question. Eartha looks at me and seems to say: Anita, you are talking all the time about many projects but you should do more in practice.

That's the point. Thank you, Eartha. Isn't she brilliant? I could kill her.

The other important fact is: Wolfgang Hampel seems to have a huge talent to make friends - really very bright and charming ones.

Our new Betty MacDonald Fan Club honor member Letizia Mancino is such a gifted personality.

are my favourites. Masterpieces! Eartha's favourites are the cats. She could look at them over and over again and she seems to smile. Eartha has a very good taste.
